The FIBA World Cup 2023, which recently concluded, was originally scheduled to be held in 2018 but was rescheduled to a different year to avoid overlapping with the FIFA World Cup. As a result, the tournament has been rescheduled to take place in 2023.

From August 25 to September 10, the FIBA Basketball World Cup will be hosted by Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines for the first time in history.

Host selection

The decision to initiate the bidding process for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup was made by the governing body on June 7th, 2016. Although initially open to bids from various countries, both Russia and Turkey ultimately decided not to pursue hosting the World Cup. Subsequently, on June 1st, 2017, FIBA announced the list of countries that had submitted their applications.

Following a rigorous competition involving Argentina and Uruguay, it was officially announced on December 9th that Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines emerged as the successful bidders and would jointly host the upcoming World Cup.

The three host countries for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, namely Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines, have individually selected their preferred teams to participate in the Group Stage.

After consultations with the host countries, the FIBA Central Board has officially announced that the Philippines will welcome the United States, Japan will host Slovenia, and Indonesia will receive Canada. Slovenia and Canada have already secured their spots in the World Cup, while the United States has a strong chance of qualifying if they win their remaining matches in the final qualifying window.

It is important to note that each host country had the opportunity to select a preferred team based on financial considerations, without compromising the fairness of the tournament or the random selection process of teams.

Qualification

To determine the majority of the teams participating in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, a qualification procedure has been put in place. A total of 30 out of the 32 teams will be selected through this process. The Asian qualifying matches will take place from November 2021 to February 2023, with each national team playing home and away games during this period. This ensures that players from various countries and fans from around the world have the opportunity to witness regular and competitive national team games at a professional level.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will feature a total of seven teams representing the Americas.

African Qualifiers

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 African Qualifiers will witness the participation of 16 African teams across five tournament windows spread over a period of fifteen months. The African national teams will engage in these qualifiers from November 2021 to February 2023.

The objective of the qualifiers is to determine the top five African teams that will secure qualification to compete in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. The World Cup itself will be hosted by Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and is scheduled to take place from August 25th to September 10th, 2023.

Latest Participating Teams

To become a co-host for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Indonesia had a requirement to finish within the top 8 teams in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup. However, despite their efforts, Indonesia was unable to progress to the semifinals of the Asia Cup. As a result, their journey in the competition came to an end on July 18th, 2022, and they were unable to secure the co-hosting qualification for the World Cup.

At the FIBA Basketball World Cup, bettors will have various betting options available to them. One popular type of bet is the outright bet, where bettors choose the team they believe will win the tournament. Moneyline odds come into play for single-game wagers, where the outcome is determined by selecting the winning team. Additionally, the point spread is another betting option, with the exception that it incorporates a handicap expressed in points.

Throughout the FIBA World Cup, there will be multiple venues hosting the games, providing bettors with a range of options to place their bets. Each game will offer its own set of betting possibilities, and there will also be futures bets available, allowing bettors to wager on the overall winner of the tournament. The betting options will have corresponding basketball odds displayed. These odds represent the probability of winning the wager.

The odds are indicated by numbers alongside the names of the participating countries, which may be followed by a plus or minus sign. If a team’s point spread has a positive value, it suggests they are the underdog, facing lower odds of winning. Conversely, a negative number indicates that the favored team is expected to win.
